Description |
An introductory examination of fine arts and popular art focusing on representative works of the United States with reference to historical, literary, and other cultural developments. The course focuses on ways in which the arts, including music and literature, are instruments of structural racism as a source of historical and ongoing oppression of people of color. Areas of specific concern are voice appropriation, content appropriation, style appropriation, and motif appropriation. Additional focus on the intersectionality of race and other social identities, including gender and class, and on the potential for the arts to service antiracist and other liberating practices that increase equitable outcomes and inclusion in American society.
