Program Coordinator: Dr. Alicia Swanson, EdD, MSN, RN, PHN, HBN-BC Professor, Nursing Faculty, Graduate Nursing Program Coordinator, Chief Academic Nursing Administrator School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership swansoal@mnstate.edu
Minnesota State University Moorhead's School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SNHL) brings together nursing and healthcare leadership programs within a single, interdisciplinary academic unit. This innovative structure supports a collaborative, systems-based approach to education, preparing students to lead, transform, and innovate across today's dynamic healthcare environments.
MSUM's graduate nursing curriculum is grounded in the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA) framework, which emphasizes excellence in education, leadership, and nursing practice. This foundation shapes the curriculum, teaching strategies, and student outcomes across all levels of study.
At the heart of the graduate nursing offerings is the Master of Science (MSN) program, which is a fully online, flexible degree designed to meet the needs of working professionals. The 31-credit MSN program provides a strong generalist foundation and offers optional 9-credit emphases in both nursing education and nursing leadership.
In addition, MSUM offers a variety of graduate certificate options that allow students to further specialize or enhance their skills in focused areas of practice:
- Nurse Educator (NED)
- Nurse Leader (NL)
- Integrative and Holistic Health (IHH)
- Informatics, Evidence-Based Practice & Project Management/Strategy (IEPMS)
To support diverse learner pathways, MSUM offers multiple entry options:
- Traditional MSN for BSN prepared RNs
- Accelerated RN to BSN pathway for associate degree RNs wanting both a BSN and MSN
- RN to MSN Bridge track for associate degree RNs with a prior non-nursing bachelor's degree that wants to earn their MSN only
Graduates of MSUM's graduate nursing programs are equipped to assume advanced roles in education, leadership, and integrative health practices, contributing to the transformation of healthcare systems and the continued advancement of the nursing profession.
Master of Science in Nursing Curriculum Components
The curriculum includes core courses, optional emphasis track advanced role courses, clinical practica, and professional portfolio. The program offers a choice of multiple entry pathways:
- MSN Generalist (31 credits) - no emphasis
- MSN with Nurse Leadership emphasis (40 credits)
